If you are considering to get a hosting account from Rackspace, you may want to (or probably have tried to) search for the keywords “Rackspace sucks” or “Rackspace bad” on Google. However, the result may confuse you. Perhaps you have read tons of good stuff and rave reviews about Rackspace.com thus far.

If you go through each of Googles result pages, it seems there a few unsatisfied customers and clients who have been through some sticky situation with Rackspace. If you search for the keywords “Rackspace sucks”, you see that there are hundreds of search engine result pages (SERPs) returned by Google. Is that a lot of bad things said about one hosting? Assuming all those result pages really talk about why this hosting provider sucked in some ways. There may be a few more result pages when you search for “Rackspace scam”, “Rackspace issues“, or ”Rackspace problems“. Do these hate or complaint sites worry you after you have read so many positive reviews? Did the hate pages make you wonder if Rackspace hosting is any good?

We cannot dismiss the fact that Rackspace is one of the most popular managed hosting companies in the market today thus may have more followers and “Rackspace rocks” pages. If you have heard the good Rackspace reviews elsewhere, you may want to proceed with them. But for us, we prefer Webfaction instead.
They do have many complaints when we compare them with Webfaction. Some major complaints about Rackspace is their price. They are also not very transparent about the costs. Their website does not display the clear cut prices for their servers. If you are paying hundreds of dollars per month, it seems safer to take the service with fewer or no complaint. Bear in mind that Webfaction also offers shared hosting services thus should be more vulnerable to complaints and bad reviews from the cheaper end services. Surprisingly, even their shared hosting service seems to be doing well.
We know, finding a good managed hosting solution can be tiring and time consuming, when you should be building site, marketing your web2.0 community or selling your product.

The main problem with Rackspace is the sales and pricing. They get you into one price then basically add features and services that good managed companies already provide. I did the pricing a few months back and you could purchase 3 servers with Server Intellect with more ram, Cpu and traffic plus have better support then you could with one Rackspace Server.
Rackspace is expensive, but the technical service is on the whole good (though not good enough to warrant the exhorbitant price)
But as someone else has pointed out the really negative point is that the sales department are way to agressive and so not surprisingly the pricing is not transparent. The very worst is that if for any reason they don’t receive payment on line, they send you an email informing you that your server has been suspended. Even if you have been a customer for 10 years (as we are). I have never encountered a company who treats a good customer so badly. 10 years ago it was quite difficult to find companies which could provide what Rackspace provides, but no longer. There’s plenty of competition which can offer the same service for a third of the price and may well treat you as a valued customer.
