All hosting companies providing unlimited create problem when you try to use resources. It is best to NOT to register with these hosts.

If you’re paying for unlimited storage, why would you not want to take advantage of that if your business has lots of CAD files, PDF’s, regulatory documents…

Read the provider’s TOS carefully before you plan to sign-up and use up the so called “unlimited storage” as infinity storage or a backup drive. Most of them will say “unlimited” is for web storage only. Is your CAD files, PDFs, or office files are to be shared on the web? If not, try something like Box.net for file storage or Carbonite for online backup.

I agree with you about these misleading “unlimited” advertising scheme. There should be a line between false advertising and otherwise acceptable “puffing”.

Energizer said this about their batteries – “It keeps going, and going, and going…” – you don’t really think they invented battery life with infinite life, do you? My wireless provider gives me “unlimited” free landline calls – does that mean I can start calling everyone in the phone directory and sell them my homemade cookies? We will soon accept the “unlimited” slogan as a norm since almost every provider is jumping on the bandwagon. If you insist on the few straight, limited but reliable providers, I highly recommend ICD Soft and Web Faction.

Three weeks down the road, you begin to realize that your hosting company isn’t going to be able to meet your requirements. What’s wrong with taking your domain name elsewhere and getting a refund?

When I said after a few days, I meant after 1 or 2 days, which is too short a time to decide if the host will meet your requirement or even the next hosting will meet your stringent requirement. Three weeks? I think that is fine provided you have researched and know that another hosting can provide what you need.

But getting the domain name for free is another story. Most providers will charge you the domain fee if you are taking it with you somewhere else. That is why I suggest you do not take the domain-for-life feature if you think a domain name is too important for you. Register the domain elsewhere instead. Godaddy or Dotster will do. You can move from host to host without worrying about your domain name. Another suggestion is to get a new hosting plan before canceling the one old one so you get less downtime.

If you’re paying for unlimited storage, why would you not want to take advantage of that if your business has lots of CAD files, PDF’s, regulatory documents, research papers, documentary photographs and videos, etc? To have a hosting operation lure you with this feature and then want you to not use it seems disingenuous at best, misleading at worst.

Say you sign up for an unlimited storage and free domain for life account. You’ve done as much research as you can but you’re by no means an expert on web hosting. A lot of times all you have to go on is what the hosting company tells you in their marketing collateral. Three weeks down the road, you begin to realize that your hosting company isn’t going to be able to meet your requirements. What’s wrong with taking your domain name elsewhere and getting a refund?

However, what I am trying to say is try not to be biased if you have to deal with somebody with different accent. Sometimes, communication is not the real issue.

But issue #7 is a real issue.
If a customer can’t understand the tech support, and the tech has difficulty conveying his/her interpretation of American English to the customer; where is the savings for the company that is hiring the outsourced tech?
When the customer’s money is the life blood of the company (especially in this horrible economy), shouldn’t there be some sort of need to oblige the customer rather than the outsourced employee?
